Cyber Security Training

Cybersecurity Training for Employees

Jun 5, 2023

Cybersecurity training maybe on the minds of board executives, but not necessarily on the minds of bored employees.

Let’s face it — learning about cybersecurity probably isn’t a top priority for the average employee, especially if they’ve never been the victim of an attack (that they know of). Most employees who work in offices or remotely use a computer to do most of their work. But how much do they know about strong passwords, malware, phishing attempts, and more?

An old adage says that 50% of advertising is wasted, but you can’t tell which 50%. Some people think the same—or worse—happens when it comes to training programs. It’s hard to know what works and why. But we all understand the benefits are important.

Business owners want to make sure that they’re getting a return on their investment. They want to be able to measure progress to show they’re spending that money wisely, getting something out of it.

Employees want to see that measurement, too, because people want to track their progress, and they want to feel good about what they’re doing and how they’re spending their limited time. They want to understand that the time spent is making a difference in their job and often benefiting them in life outside of work.

Some areas you should cover:

Password security training

Employees should be taught how to create strong passwords and how to protect them from theft. This includes not sharing passwords, using two-factor authentication, and regularly updating passwords.

Phishing training

Phishing attacks are one of the most common forms of cyberattacks. Employees should be taught to identify phishing attempts, including email, text messages, and social engineering attacks.

Malware training

Malware is malicious software that can infect computers and steal data. Employees should be taught how to identify and avoid malware, including using anti-virus software and keeping their devices up to date.

Social engineering training

Social engineering uses deception to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential information. Employees should be taught how to recognize and resist social engineering tactics.

Data protection training

Employees should be taught how to protect confidential information, including the proper handling and disposal of data, as well as the use of encryption and other security measures.

Incident reporting training

Employees should be taught how to report incidents, including the steps to take if they suspect a cyberattack has occurred or if they accidentally reveal confidential information.

Mobile device security training

With the increasing use of mobile devices, employees should be taught how to secure their phones and tablets, including passcodes and encryption, and avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

Remote work security training

With more employees working remotely, cybersecurity awareness training should include best practices for secure remote work, including using virtual private networks (VPNs) and other security measures to protect against cyberattacks.

Knowledge built in all the above benefits employees in work and carries over to their personal life.

Cybersecurity Training is the first line of defence

Whether your company has five employees, or over 500, cybersecurity threats are a real risk. When most breaches are caused by human error, data shouldn’t be left out in the open to be stolen by hackers and cybercriminals. Cybersecurity training helps employees to know how to spot potential threats, and to follow cybersecurity best practices, is the foundation of keeping your company and its data secure.

But while cybersecurity training is the answer, simply having a program in place isn’t enough. While they may be faceless, hackers and cybercriminals are real people, with expert knowledge and skills to exploit even the smallest of vulnerabilities.

That’s why to achieve real results and a significant return on your training investments, make sure your program is regularly updated, interactive, engaging, and designed for humans, not machines.
